There are certainly plenty of mining companies that only advertise for operators with experience. Generally, these are your larger organisations that contract recruitment companies to do their seeking of candidate.
If you look at recruitment company ads then more often than not they will be asking for experience as they have been given a brief from the mining company of the requirements that they cannot deviate from. They are also quite often running a fleet of larger sized mechanical-drive or diesel electric haul trucks that someone with little to no experience is unlikely to start on. These are not the type of companies that will give an inexperienced person a shot at mining so these companies are not the ones you want to focus on.
Equally looking at jobs advertised by recruitment companies is also not where you should be looking. Most opportunities for inexperienced people will be given by the middle & lower tier contract mining companies, not your BHP, Rio Tinto or FMG sized companies.
These smaller companies tend to operate on multi tasking/skilling their personnel and you will find they are open to giving operators more variety and skill if they hold the qualifications or licences that allow them too. For this reason presenting yourself ready to go with the applicable tickets will open up opportunities that certainly the larger organisations won’t give you.
Equally, we have now seen a large increase in experienced clients being sent through the course or upskilled on-site with our trainers as they are now required to hold the machine tickets as requirements like Schedule 26 raised the bar on supervisory legal accountability. Mine managers and supervisors can no longer risk approving operators based purely on informal experience or quick in-house VOCs; requiring a formal rigid haul truck ticket ensures compliance with strict regulatory audit standards whilst setting a national benchmark for future VOC processes.
